Wiring Choppers III

Mount the solenoid for the starter motor next, and connect it to the battery "+" terminal and the starter motor with cables of at least the size of the originals. There are usually two wires on the solenoid (as opposed to cables), though sometimes there is only one and the earth is supplied through the body of the solenoid. If the earth is through the solenoid body, rubber mounting means you'll need to provide a separate earth lead from the body.

Either way, the wire from the solenoid is connected to the "START" terminal on the back of the switch, so that when they key is turned to the "START" position the solenoid is activated. Tip here is that if there's a black wire that's usually the earth, so wire it to earth! Power in to any unit usually goes to the wire with the male connector if it has bullet or spade type connectors on wires (this is so the feed has a female end and isn't so likely to short out).Temporarily fit the earth cable to the battery and check if the motor turns over when you turn the key to the "start" position.
